When considered beyond the annoying treatment of my favourite characters, the status of the Zentraedi in the post-1982 Macross productions looks like a gift: they live human lives, with human bonds, and none of Robotech’s messiness. Yet the biggest shock when venturing further into the Macross universe was the apparent retconning of Exsedol Folmo into a completely new personality and design, which in the process removed many of the qualities that had captured my interest and seemed to terminate his character arc.

Even when it seems logical to become a Macross-only fan, I cannot fully love the Macross franchise and reject Robotech, as a good anime geek should. My attachments to certain expanded multiverse portrayals are the obvious cause, but I feel slightly estranged from the Macross universe for other reasons ( Read more... )

You would think, if my focus were primarily on a Macross element, I would have nothing to do with Robotech after my initial probing. Instead, many strange things happened, and matters instead branched off into two basic forks: the Robotech expanded multiverse (most of it currently deemed unofficial) and the mainstream Macross continuity ( Read more... )

I will describe my feelings on each major Zentraedi character from that initial storyline. It was with the Robotech dub that I first formulated my opinions on the Zentraedi, so to start with, I’ll be using the Robotech names.

For me, there is just something about the Zentraedi characters: they don’t exactly transcend cliché, but some aspects of their characterization make them stand out among the numerous other examples of the “What is this thing that you humans call love?” type of alien.
